Job Secured after Employability Workshop

"Attending an interview preparation workshop greatly helped me to secure a part time job in the area of my study," says Hansani Senadeera, who landed a part time role as a microbiology lab technician at AsureQuality after learning how to approach interview questions at the workshop.

She says practising responses to common interview questions really set her up well for the interview because a number of the questions she’d practised were asked during the interview.
“I felt so much more confident because I had thought about possible answers to questions such as ‘Give us an example of how you work under pressure’, and ‘Tell us about a previous experience of working with a difficult person’. I was also very glad I’d thought about how to introduce myself fully,” explains Hansani.

The workshop also talked about preparing for zoom interviews, including the importance of setting up in a suitable location without any distractions and ensuring your laptop is positioned at eye level.
“Even little things like remembering to wear suitable attire for the interview, even though you are at home, makes a big difference to how you present,” says Hansani.

A LinkedIn workshop also offered insight to Hansani about how to network using the channel.
“I realised it can be a very powerful tool when looking for work and have updated mine a lot.”

A Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science student, Hansani read about the Employability and Career Services on the AUT App and then attended Employability workshops through the Science Faculty.Hansani Senadeera reading Food Science Career Sheet

She encourages AUT students to make the most of the services and actively attend the workshops and sessions that are organised by the Employability Lab team.
“You will definitely learn a lot of tips and useful information regarding your education field and career path. The workshops I attended helped me to build up my confidence, make new connections and get the part time job I wanted.”
