Don't forget why you're doing your degree

Mary-Lynn Huxford

The first weeks of uni can be confusing and exciting, says Mary-Lynn Huxford.

“Everything about university was very new but going to O Week reduced some of my nerves for my first weeks becuase it helped me learn the systems at AUT and find my way around.”

This obviously set her off on a good path three years ago because Mary-Lynn successfully completed her Bachelor of Arts in Education and Conflict Resolution in December and is happily employed with The Career Academy.

Making the most of the Employability and Career services also made a big difference, says Mary-Lynn. By her second year Mary-Lynn was frequently in and out of the Employability Lab.

“Not only was I given up-to-date knowledge about what employers were looking for, but I was also given practical skills of what a graduate in NZ should include. The workshops forced me to expand my knowledge further and improve my employability skills, and I am very thankful that they were market-specific.”Huxford, Mary-Lynn

She says she booked appointments with Employability Lab specialists to help her prepare her LinkedIn profile, CV and cover letter specifically for jobs she was applying for.

“They gave great feedback and encouragement. I still remember hearing ‘It's perfect’ and they were right. Not only did I land an interview for that position, but I was also offered the job the very next day.”

Yes, it can feel overwhelming at first, says Mary-Lynn, and the employability stuff may not seem important.

“If you're feeling shy, pop into one of the group sessions and just sit and listen. I promise you they don't bite. Trust me, you will thank yourself for going. You will thank yourself when you cross that stage, receive your degree and know that you already have a job lined up.”
